It's less than $4 so really, unless it shatters in your hand and stabs you severely I'm not sure what there is to hate about this item. It is 40mm wide and about 45mm from bottom to top. The channeling and hole drilled at the top are a little rough and I can imagine some of these might be chipped slightly because of the rough cut. I read reviews on the smaller version and they had issues with a broken top or the hole cracking etc. That's why i opted for this larger size and as recessed as the hanging hole is, I can't imagine that being an issue with this one. I can't attest to the fact that it's crystal because I wouldn't know the difference just by looking at it. But I can say it's a prism and given the physical properties of such, you will always get the rainbowed light emitted from typical light sources. Although blaring a white LED directly through it, I was able to get a light purple(color of ball) haze projected on the wall immediately in front of the light, but the surrounding shimmers were still rainbowed. Again $4 item, so it's a novelty item, not a Crown Jewel. I'm happy with my purchase, and I hope this helped. UPDATE 11/29 This item was put in a messenger bag and taken to work to display. By the end of the day when pulled out of the bag, it was a light blue. The purple finish had either worn off or worn down a bit. I'm still happy with it for the price, and considering such, i should have wrapped it in tissue paper or not left it in all day.
